As always, the trends in fashion and interiors go hand in hand, but instead of fashion paving the way for the trends in interiors, this past season I have seen the opposite with interiors leading the way. While attending
High Point Market this past April, I noticed a few subtle references to African tribal art, and then while attending
Las Vegas Market four months later in July, I noticed yet a stronger influence with more lines catching on to the trend.
With the presence of African tribal influences coming on very strong on the Spring/Summer 2014 runways in New York, London, Milan, and Paris, the trend will surely pick up in the interior sector, so get ready for more to come!

Tribal art can be a bit intimidating to decorate with for some (and I wouldn’t recommend going overboard with it and doing an entire room), but when used as a combination of accent pieces such as a vase, pillow, or rug, or wall art, bringing in a little bit of the newest trends into the home can keep the decor looking fresh and in the moment.

While stopping by the Stanley Furniture Showroom to see the West Coast premiere of the new Montreaux Collection I spotted this tribal inspired rug. What a great way to shake up the room a bit. By the way – the square coffee table pictured above, an absolute winner.

Tribal inspired patterns and motifs (and ikats) were seen on rugs in almost every rug showroom I stepped foot in.

These wood carved wall hangings from Selamat Designs contain a series of tribal patterns, but the colors and materials used are anything but tribal and gives this a contemporary twist.

High Point Market is right around the corner from October 19-24, so I can’t wait to see what new trends I see going forward.
