The Touch-Free, Germ-Free Bathroom

Let’s face it – the bathroom isn’t usually the cleanest room in the house – especially if you have little boys like I do.  So let me take you through the cleanest bathroom experience, where the only thing you’ll have to touch is the zipper and button on the top of your pants… and maybe a remote to change radio stations while you’re doing your business. The ultimate bath ensemble for the high-end germaphobe.

The Touch-Free Light Switch

The Adorne® Wave Switch by Legrand

Upon making your entrance into the bathroom, a simple wave at the Wave Switch by Legrand will turn on the lights.  The nice thing about this switch plate is available in a variety of options – colors, metals, wood, and a custom option for those using wallpaper. Whatever your style may be – they’ve got it covered. Prices start at $49 for the Wave switch and $4.78 for the switch plate.

Touch-Free Toilets

Say the word “toilet” and the first thing that comes to mind is germs – and lots of ’em.  Technology, however, has come to the rescue with a selection of touch-free toilets.

Kohler Numi

The Kohler Numi toilet allows for hands-free opening and closing of the lid and seat, a bidet, and automatic flushing.  In addition to these automated features comes a heated seat, a foot warmer, an advanced bidet function with a self cleaning wand, air dryer, and deodorizer. And to top it off, built in speakers allow one to listen to FM radio or their own custom playlist while doing their business.  It even has a pre-programmed message to greet you or your visitors as they approach the toilet. Ok, I probably could do without that last feature…

All these amenities don’t come cheap, though – prices run upwards of $4500.

2014 Sunset Idea House by DISC Interiors

The picture above was taken when I toured the Sunset Idea House not too long ago.  Note the blue light at the bottom right.  The blue light acts as a sensor and controls the opening and closing of the lid and seat, and flushes the toilet – all without having to lift a finger. Activate the sensor with a swipe of the foot, and voilà – the lid opens, the toilet seat raises, or the toilet flushes. On a very cold day, warm air blows from below to keep your feet warm and toasty.  Definitely not a feature that  would get much use in California, but perhaps in North Dakota, where I was born – in the dead of winter.

Toto Neorest

The Toto Neorest series is another toilet that incorporates touch-free technology in the bathroom.  Like the Kohler Numi, the Toto Neorest is equipped with an automatic hands-free opening and closing lid and automatic flush, and can sense when someone is approaching or walking away.   All other features such as the front/rear washing and drying, heated seat are accessed via the accompanying remote.  The Neorest has three models – The Toto Neorest 550H, the Neorest 550, and the top of the line Toto Neorest 700H.  The Toto Neorest 550  has a slightly higher water rating, so in the interest of water conservation (and in CA it is a real issue), go with either the Neorest 550H or 700H.

Toto Neorest 700H for the touch-free, germ-free bathroom

The one thing that the Neorest does not have that the Kohler offers is the foot warmer and music, but if you ask me, those features really aren’t necessary.  The real issue is how well do they actually clean, because no one wants to walk away from the toilet with a dirty bum, now do they? Some say it’s all about the experience, but  for me it’s all about doing my business -getting in and out as quickly as possible, and without having to touch germ laden surfaces.  Now if these toilets had voice commands to activate the wash and dry features, I would be set!  Siri? Perhaps an idea for a future collaboration?!? If so, I’m first in line to test out the new features!

The Touch-Free Soap Dispenser

Every visit to the toilet requires one to wash his or her hands, regardless of whether or not the bathroom is equipped with a toilet with touch-free features.  This brings us to the touch-free soap dispenser – a must for any germaphobe, and as affordable as they are nowadays, there is no excuse not to own one.

Simplehuman Rechargeable Sensor Pump Soap Dispenser

This sensor pump soap dispenser by simplehuman uses a USB power adaptor to recharge, and can fully charge in 2 hours, providing up to 3 months of power.  If there is someone in the house or guests that are adverse to technology or perhaps you’re a germaphobe and your spouse is not, you can also dispense soap the old fashioned way -by dispensing soap manually with the touch of a finger.

The Touch-Free Faucet and Hand Dryer

If  you have the touch-free soap dispenser, chances are you’ll need water to complete the process, and there is nothing quite like this next touch-free, germ-free product.

Dyson Airblade Tap Hand Dryer

The person who invented the Dyson Airblade Tap hand dryer is brilliant.  The Dyson Airblade Tap is a touch-free faucet with a built in touch-free hand dryer.  Infrared water and air sensors emit a light to detect the hand’s position, activating either the water or air.  Unlike other air dryers on the market, the Dyson Airblade uses a HEPA filter to remove 99.7% of the bacteria, allowing you to dry your hands with clean, not dirty, recirculated air.  After going through the entire process of being touch-free and germ-free in the bath, you definitely do not want to conclude your visit to the loo by blowing bacteria back on your hands!

You may remember this fixture from my recent post on what was trending at Dwell on Design back in June.  Here, the Dyson Airblade Tap is shown installed with the Neo-Metro All In One PAT basin.

Neo-Metro PAT - Tap GreySo now that you’ve finished what you needed to do in the bathroom,  wave at the switch plate as you’re exiting to turn off the lights, and off you go!

So how’s that for the cleanest touch-free, germ-free bathroom experience ever?
