Five days at High Point Market and I have a lot to report on the 2023 home decor trends. This market was the busiest I’ve seen it since Fall 2019 – the last market before the pandemic.  High Point Market is the place to see the 2023 home design trends as they start to make their way into homes across America.

There was no shortage of trends being introduced.  Some trends have been going on for some time but the disruption of the pandemic.  While there is some newness, the pace at which the newness is being introduced has slowed down a bit.  This may not be as evident to those who are just returning to market after skipping a few due to the pandemic.  I have attended every market for the last nine years, so luckily I have a pretty good pulse on the newest introductions to market.

The Key Color Palette

The painting above pretty much sums up the color palette I saw at market:  dusty mauve, sage green, ochre, steel blue, red clay.  This color palette was one of the key trend “mindsets” that I recently saw at Heimtextil this past June.  However, the saturation of the color palette  seen in the US is noticeably less intense, which I oftentimes find to be the case when comparing the textiles from Europe vs. the US.  Here in the US we tend to play it safe and are less adventurous – especially when it comes to color.  From transitional to modern to vintage, combinations of the color palette seen in this painting was seen all throughout market. We’ll definitely be seeing more of this home design trend in 2023.

So what are the other common threads and 2023 furniture trends I saw running through High Point Market? There were quite a few and here are some of my observations:

Key 2023 Home Decor Trends

  • Travertine
  • Playing Games
  • Tweed
  • Fully Upholstered Frames
  • Pet Friendly Spaces

Whether it be vintage or newly made, travertine is hot.  Natural, monolithic, and full of character.  There’s something about it – it is one of the few stones that reads as warm.   The pitted surface, subtle veining, and the warm buttery tone  mixes well with wood and warm-toned metals, such as an antique or patinaed brass.

This is one 2023 furniture trend that I have been using in my own projects and I will continue to do so.  The material is classic and timeless, yet the shapes that are being created today are very modern.  It is the classic marriage between the past and present.

Home design trends 2023- Game Tables

Being stuck at home for the last couple of years,  “work from home” is definitely a thing, but shouldn’t “play at home” be a thing, too? It actually is.  The pandemic is undoubtedly one of the reasons we are seeing more game tables at market.  You know what they say.  “All work and no play make Jack a dull boy”.  With all these great game table options, now there really is no reason for Jack to be dull.

The Continuation of Boucle

Cream colored boucle.  I’ve seen it everywhere.  YOU’VE seen it everywhere. And when I say everywhere, I mean everywhere.  Boucle is still one of the biggest home design trends for 2023.  Even though the trend emerged well before the pandemic, showrooms are still full of boucle accent chairs and ottomans.  It has hit the mass market in a big way but I didn’t include it on my list as the trend has hit its peak.  In my opinion, too much of a good thing can become a bad thing, but I get it.  It is safe and evokes the feeling of comfort and security – a feeling that we’ve all craved since the pandemic hit in 2020.  I’ve seen so much of it and am ready to move on to other 2023 home decor trends that are just taking shape.

Tweed to the Rescue!

Luckily, I see that the trend is slowly evolving.  There are more colors other than cream that have been added to the repertoire that I am seeing at market and from our fabric suppliers.  Tweed is the newest reinterpretation of boucle.  It isn’t as lofty but still retains the nubby texture and warmth of boucle, and now with the addition of colored yarns for more visual interest.  What I love about tweed is that you can incorporate lots of different color but it still reads as neutral.  It really is the perfect solution for those who might be timid about using color in their space. You can pull the colors out of the tweed to incorporate into the space.  Oftentimes we use it in our projects and use the various colored yarns to unify all the colors in the room.

I love a pretty and exposed wood or metal leg, but nothing says custom like a fully upholstered leg.  At High Point Fall 2022 Market I saw several instances of every appendage, leg and arm, upholstered from head to toe.  It is not easy to do well, so it takes a skilled craftsman.  I really do like it and the bright side is that you don’t have to worry about having to match the wood stain to anything of the other stained woods in the room – it goes with everything!

There is no doubt that our pets have taken over at home.  Remodeled kitchens now feature dedicated pet feeding areas that are integrated into the cabinetry.  Laundry rooms have a dedicated pet washing station that integrates with the decor of the home.  So why shouldn’t pet beds also match the decor of the furniture in the room?  Designer pet beds were seen all throughout market, and they are an add-on purchase for the consumer that loves their pets.  They are made of the same fancy stained wood or brass frames and with either the same or coordinating upholstery as the family room sofa.  With performance textiles on the rise, we’ll be sure to see more of this trend.

High Point Market Fall 2022 Round Up

So there you have it – my observations from High Point Market  – Fall 2022.  What do you think of the 2023 furniture trends coming your way in the upcoming year? Some other observations – lots of swiveling ottomans, Art Deco influences, an emphasis on sustainability, and lots of curves!  Overall, there were some strong elements that will resonate with the consumer and will make a splash in the mass market.  Design and creativity continues to evolve – especially to keep designers consistently engaged with fresh ideas so they can do what they love – interior design.
