The LED Bulb Speaker for Sony Life Space UX

Sony’s new Bluetooth-enabled LED Bulb Speaker, from their new design and lifestyle line Life Space UX,  is a game changer in  how we experience light and sound in our living and working environments.   We recently received our first shipment of Sony Life Space UX products: the LED Bulb Speaker, the Glass Sound Speaker, and the Portable Ultra Short Throw Projector, all of which were designed to change the way we experience the environment via light, sound and imagery.  In this post  I will only be covering the LED Bulb Speaker, but not to worry – I will cover the other two products later on this week and next.

After having the opportunity to experiment with, demonstrate, and listen to our customers’ reactions in the shop over the last couple of weeks,  and at the West Coast launch party of SONY Life Space UX,  I truly believe that the possibilities are limitless. Now it is possible to have sound where one never expected.  Above a kitchen island, in the middle of an entry hall, suspended above a bed- all with no fussy or unsightly cords. Sony Life Space UX has transformed the everyday light socket and it is now useful for something other than just light.

The LED Bulb Speakers could not have arrived at a more opportune time.  Having recently opened our shop in Old Pasadena, I was tasked with figuring out how to pipe music through the store without the hassle of cords and having to constantly recharge wireless speakers, as I wanted the sound to come from above, in the center of the room where no outlets are available.

Completely wireless, the Sony LED Bulb Speaker never needs charging.  Simply screw the bulb into an E26 light socket (that’s technical speak for what most consider a standard socket), pair the Bulb Speaker with the included remote, download the SongPal app and dedicated LED Bulb Speaker app on any smart device, and you are ready to have full control of your song selection and lighting options.  I can seamlessly access both Pandora and Spotify, as well as my iTunes library from one screen on my device.

And when I mention lighting options, I don’t mean a simple on and off.  First of all, there is the warm glow of a traditional white bulb that has a number of dimmable light levels.

Watch to see how you dim the light or turn the light on and off via the LED Bulb Speaker app on my iPod.  Keep in mind that if you would like to listen to music but have the lights off, that is entirely possible. The timer is also a great feature for those who like to fall asleep to music.

The LED Bulb Speaker offers 192 colors

But there are also choices, and lots of them.  192 colors, several brightness levels, preset lighting patterns, a timer, and the option to pair to an additional device in either mono or stereo. Below, bulbs utilizing one of the many color features are channeling color through the glass and the light appears as thin ribbons of color at the edge of each piece of glass.

An E26 light socket and power source are all that is needed for the the LED Bulb Speaker to work.  It can be used in any E26 light socket, whether it be a ceiling mount pendant, a wall sconce, a table lamp, or floor lamp.

For those who prefer minimalist design, here is the LED Bulb Speaker shown in a simple socket and color cord.  The options are limitless!

Pair up to Two LED Bulb Speakers

Below, the purple pendant on the left and the blue pendant on the right are paired with one another and are playing in stereo. You don’t necessarily have to put the bulbs in the same type of fixture.  One can be in a table lamp on one side of the room and the other can be in a hanging pendant, and both will play music ( programmed to play in either mono or stereo) and will deliver light in unison.

Now that you’ve seen all the photos, how about some video to demonstrate how the Life Space UX LED Bulb Speaker works, because seeing is believing.  However, in retrospect I should have set the light color to red!
