The Sophisticated Man Room – Is it possible to have the words “sophisticated” and “man” in the same sentence? When I’m done with this post , you’ll see that the answer is “yes”. Father’s Day is right around the corner, so what better way to honor the special man in your life than by dedicating a room to him – the sophisticated man room – inspired by the Gentleman’s Club of years past. Masculine, yet still sophisticated that even the lady of the house won’t feel out of place spending time in the shrine dedicated to “he”. Listed below are things to consider when planning the stylish and sophisticated man room :
- tufted leather club chairs
- dark wood wall paneling
- nailhead trim
- vintage steamer trunks
- scotch and martinis
- leather or exotic hide (think crocodile, shagreen) wrapped case goods
- traditional textile patterns – houndstooth, plaid, pin stripes
- vintage sports, game memorabilia
And the list goes on. So go ahead – replace those stacks of Sports Illustrated magazines with coffee table books on classic cars, vintage wine, and the work of Ansel Adams, the beer cans with cut crystal scotch glasses, and the old recliner from his frat boy days with a leather club chair. It’s time to grow up!
Ralph Lauren Home’s High Point showroom at E.J. Victor is a perfect example of the sophisticated man room – a dark, velvet chesterfield sofa (deep tufting is almost always considered sophisticated), deep rich wood where the direction of the grain pays an important part in the design of each piece. Martini glasses strewn about, and a backgammon set is laid out on the coffee table along with a selection of coffee table books (no Sports Illustrated swimsuit editions here!)
Lillian August mixes a tartan plaid tufted cube with a shagreen front faced chest, a tufted leather chair, and framed black and white photographs on the wall. Note that the orchid does not look at all out of place – very distinguished. This feminine touch makes all the difference.
Timothy Oulton gets a little bit more playful, yet it still maintains a level of sophistication. A mulri-riveted aluminum coffee table sits in the middle of the room and six enlarged face cards are framed on the wall. The crystal chandelier hanging from above and the two crystal table lamps on either side of the room provides just a touch of femininity – boys and bling actually do mix!
This last scene, from Thom Filicia incorporates traditional elements – two tufted club chairs and a tall William IV bow front dresser, but Filicia manages to keep things looking fresh by incorporating a few not so stodgy elements such as the kilim covered ottoman, the horizontal stripes painted on the wall to resemble pinstripe suiting, and a contemporary piece of art on the wall. Oh, and let’s not overlook the cashmere throw – now that’s a true sign of sophistication!
So now that I’ve given you a quick tutorial, here are a few pieces to get you on your way. P.S.-You know you’ve nailed the look when you can add a plant or fresh cut flowers to the room and they don’t look out of place!
