Spring officially arrives today at 12:57 so what better way to ring in the new season than with a visit to the New York City Flower Market with none other than Tess Casey, world renown floral designer and set decorator- our first stop of the day with BlogTourNYc and sponsored by Troy Hanson and Megan Reilly of WestEdge Design Fair.

The Beautiful Textures at the New York City Flower Market

Exotic tulips, hyacinths, roses, peonies, ranunculus….the New York Flower City Market District had it all.

And if a visit to the flower market district was not enough, next we were off to the studio of Tess Casey, renown floral decorator and set designer for movies and TV shows such as Sex in the City, The Devil Wears Prada, Ugly Betty, and Pan Am, to name a few.
After giving us a lesson on the mechanics of floral arranging and the important things to consider when composing a successful arrangement, we were given an assignment to put together our own arrangement using the information we had just learned.

Some of our creations:

If you’re ever in the area (28th St. and 7th Avenue, near FIT) I would recommend coming for a look. I frequented the shops that line 28th Street back when I lived across the river in New Jersey, and they definitely had the best quality and prices in the Tri-State area. Not all the shops will sell retail, so it is best to check . Even though the market opens at 5:30, go towards the end of the day after most of the designers have made their rounds and it is less crowded. If you’re lucky, you may even see perfectly good shrubs and trees being thrown out at the end of the day. One of my favorite stores on 28th Street sells all types of accessories for flower arranging (no actual flowers or greenery), but all types of mosses, vases, ribbon, glass marbles. The best thing is that they also happen to have an online site, and their photographs are pretty true to life, so check them out at Jamali Garden. Happy shopping!
Jeanne I love your photos!!! The quality and color surpass anything I’ve seen. I should have paid attention to what camera you were using. I also love the details you get on the flowers in your close ups. A goal for me to strive for. I loved our first full day with Tess. It was such a treat!! Your photos bring the memories of that special day back to life for me….thx for sharing!
Thanks, Deborah! Just using a regular beginner DSLR. We had a lot of fun, didn’t we? I wish I could do it all over again…
