Art Deco is trending now, but in no city other than New York do you see Art Deco influences every day and every which way you look. On my recent trip to New York for Blogfest, I snapped up a few pictures of the Art Deco influences I came across.
Walking down 34th Street from 11th Avenue on the way back from the International Contemporary Furniture Fair, I caught a glimpse of the iconic Empire State Building, peeking out from behind the many other buildings lining 34th Street.
It’s easy to overlook all the sites when you’re dodging all the pedestrians in front of you. But I did manage to glance up to notice the Art Deco detailing on the New Yorker building.
While sitting on the bus and making our way from the Kips Bay Decorator Show House to HGTV Headquarters at Hearst Tower for lunch, we passed by Bergdorf’s Men and I noticed the façade pictured below – more art deco influences.
After lunch we hopped back on the bus and made our way over to Newel Antiques for cocktails. On the way there, I spotted Tiffany’s, which had a temporary Art Deco motif drawn on the façade of the building.
Arriving at Newel Antiques, a 6 story treasure trove of antiques from every era imaginable, I noticed that several 1920s Art Deco era light fixtures were hung prominently on the first floor gallery. Lots of gold and crystal, they gleamed beautifully and I could only imagine where they had hung before arriving at Newel.
The fixture above can be had for a paltry $750,000 (there are 6 available). At one time it adorned the ceiling in the ballroom of the Philadelphia Municipal Auditorium.

If you happen to be in New York, take a second to look up and notice all the beautiful landmarks in the city. I lived there for several years during and after my college years, then more recently spent 3 days a week there while I was in interior design school, but I never bothered to look up and notice all the beautiful details on the buildings since I was always in a rush to get from one place to the other. Now in retrospect I’d like to kick myself, because life in the city would have been so much more fulfilling had I noticed all these wonderful details back then.
