My Current Obsession: Grey and White Stripes

Simply put, "WOW" was my first impression when I came across this picture of architect/interior designer/furniture maker Jean-Louis Deniot's Paris apartment on one of my favorite blogs, The Decorista.  I love  the play on perspective in the diagonal and horizontal stripes and how the mirrored surfaces on the wall and commode give a false illusion by altering the width of the stripes.  Normally stripes going every which way would have a dizzying effect, but I find this particular room rather soothing.  Perhaps it is the weathered grey surface that soothes, giving off  the false appearance of a worn heather grey cashmere sweater?   This together with the wood trim on the edge of the mirror and the matte gold light fixtures brings warmth to the room. This powder room has a simple elegance which is oh SOOO luxurious, and brilliant, to say the least.

Wide grey and white horizontal stripes on walls

Wide grey and white stripes, horizontal in direction and in an ever so slight shade of grey, have been making the rounds in interiors around the globe, however, they are more often than not, much more subdued than  Jean-Louis Deniot's powder room.

Notice how the direction of the stripes on the chair in the foreground above are perpendicular to those on the wall - another play on stripes.

The pictures above, even though they are or varying styles, share one thing in common besides the use of grey and white horizontal stripes.  All include a hint of wood to provide a feeling of warmth to each room.  Grey and white can easily come off as stark and cold, but the addition of wood is a surefire way to make the room feel warm and cozy.  It definitely does the trick in these four rooms.

Not only are grey stripes seen on walls these days, but they are being seen more and more on area rugs, both large and small, to liven up a room.  Don't you love how the espresso stained floor, dove grey cabinetry, stainless appliances, and carrara marble work so harmoniously together with the grey and white striped rug?

For a little hint of color, add citron

Citron can be added to the pale grey and white mix for a touch of whimsy.  I love how subtle the pale citron is in the picture above.  Just a hint - it is perfect.
